Julian Aaron Cook (October 7, 1916 – June 19, 1990) was an officer of the United States Army who gained fame during World War II for his crossing of the Waal river during Operation Market Garden in September 1944.

Biography[edit]

Cook was born at Mount Holly, VT on October 7, 1916. He attended the United States Military Academy at West Point, and graduated as an officer in 1940. He volunteered for the airborne forces in 1942, joining the 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment (504th PIR), part of the 82nd Airborne Division, nicknamed the "All Americans".
Cook made combat jumps into Sicily, Salerno, and Anzio before beginning command of the 3rd Battalion, 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment just prior to Operation Market Garden. The 504th PIR, due to heavy losses and a lack of airborne replacements, did not participate in the invasion of Normandy.[1]
On September 17, 1944, Cook, now a major, jumped into the Netherlands near the Maas-Waal Canal. After assisting in securing the canal crossing, his unit marched to Nijmegen. Major General Gavin, commanding the 82nd Airborne, had ordered a crossing of the Waal River during daylight hours so the Americans could outflank the German defenders, who were dug in around the city’s crucial bridges. Cook was put in charge of the crossing, was in the first wave across the river. As Cook’s first wave began their crossing, the Allied bombardment began. The wind blew away the smokescreen, leaving the men in the water open and visible to the German guns. As a devout Catholic, Cook loudly recited Hail Mary during the crossing, spurring his men on under the withering fire. He took charge of the boats, redirecting those who were disoriented and pushing the men along. Once ashore, the 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment cleared the river bank. and assaulted the highway bridge.[2][3][4] Cook was subsequently awarded the Distinguished Service Cross.[5]
After Market Garden, Cook was promoted to lieutenant colonel. Cook led his battalion during the Ardennes Offensive in fights around Trois-Ponts, Cheneux[6] and Herresbach, and later on in the drive through Germany. At the end of the war he was promoted to colonel.
In 1953 Cook became American liaison officer to the French forces in French Indochina. There he became ill and spent eight months in hospitals.
He died at Columbia, SC on June 19, 1990.
Robert Redford portrayed Cook in the 1977 film A Bridge Too Far.

Honours and awards[edit]

On October 8, 1945 by Royal Decree, Cook was knighted by Queen Wilhelmina, with the rank of Knight 4th class of the Military William Order. The Order is the highest and oldest honour of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, which is bestowed for "performing excellent acts of Bravery, Leadership and Loyalty in battle".[7] It is an extremely prestigious award, comparable to the French L

Fear and Courage

Courage is feeling the fear and doing it anyway.
However, My focus on story telling right now is telling the awesome stories of some of the Vets I have interviewed like:
PFC Finney who served in Okinawa as a medic. Finney said he became a medic, when in basic he was reluctant to stab the "enemy dummy". His platoon sgt. sent him to a chaplain, who recommened he become a medic. He cannot understand why all the medics were not killed or injured like he was - "crawling from foxhole to foxhole stopping the bleeding of his wounded comrades. He did carry an M1 rifle and I asked him if he would have shot the enemies to protect his brothers in arms, and he replied definitely. Besides the Purple Heart, he received a Bronze Star.
 Spec. Dan Wright...

THE LAST OF THE HOGANS HEROS, THE LAST PEARL HARBOR SURVIVOR (BOTH OF THESE MEDAL WINNING VETS ARE 97 NOW. Also my first WAC - a feisty 95 year old, who trained to be a machine gunner and she still is angry they would not let her in combat, yet her advice for future generations is "love everybody". I interviewed a 94 y. o. who parachuted into Normandy on Dday, was injured shortly thereafter, recovered in England and flew back to fight with Patton and his Tanks as an infantry man.

Teenager KIA in Vietnam

Another innocent victim of unjust war. He was still a teenager!
Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund with Adolph Martinez.
Today we honor Toney Mycka of Sioux City, Iowa, who fell on this day in 1969. He is remembered by his fiance Linda:
"Miss you everyday!"
Ensure this hero, who died at the tender age of 19, is never forgotten

Interviewing a WAC

Ron Alexander: I interviewed a very fiesty little WW2 vet (a WAC)
. 95 years old, who was trained to shoot machine guns for a year, then they decided women should not go into combat. She is still angry about that. "I would shoot the bad guys:", Yet, ironically, her advice for future generation is to "love everybody"!

New Help with Veteran's History Project at Library of Congress

HELLO Rod,
Fantastic, look forward to meeting with you Rod. I have a lot of interviews I need some help with, but my worst problem is the almost inaudible video from the last survivor of the Merrill's Marauders in Burma.
  Yours truly, Ron
Hi Ron--
I'd be glad to work with you.
I'm out of the country now, but will contact you when I return -- the last week in June.
Rod Gragg

Hello Mr. Gragg, My name is Ron Alexander. I am a volunteer at VA Hosp. in Charleston. I have been interviewing some veterans for the Veterans History Project at Library of Congress. I interviewed one James White at the Anderson Lakes Nursing Home in Conway. He is a 96 year old vet. who may be the last remaining survivor of the Merrill's Marauders in Burma. I have volume problems with the interview. The activities director there told me that you interviewed him previously. Could you help me with your interview, and together get a package together for the Library of Congress.
In addition, being a former resident of that area, I have two possible volunteers who want to get involved. An Airborne Vietnam Vet.. and his wife. There are five WW11 vets. in that area, who are available for interviews. I would be very grateful if we could cooperate on this matter.

Dear Rod, This is wonderful, I have interviewed the Last of the Hogans' Heros a few months ago, the last Pearl Harbor Survivor, last week at the Victory House in Walterboro. At the same place I interviewed an 101st Airborne sgt. who parachuted into Normandy on Dday, and then fought with Patton as an infantryman helping protect his tanks. I have interviewed a Medic from Okinawa, who resides in palliative care at Charleston VA , also here in Charleston, I interviewed the last of the Chicago Port Disaster, plus a sgt who did dangerous wrap up work in Iwo Jima in a "wild west atmosphere in Iwo Jima and then he had to do same thing in Okinawa. This weekend I have interviews with two women vets in Murrells Inlet nursing home, and a male vet there. and even more...I feel it is urgent as 3 have died recently in Victory House, including another Pearl Harbor Survivor. One 94 y.o. vet has died here in Charleston's VA Hospice, however I got to interview him first thankfully. I have another awaiting in N. Charleston, who was part of 4 Dday invasions in North Africa and then 3 islands in the Pacific. I need help editing and getting the most poignant parts of each interview for a montage documentation. And some of them, I need alots of help, like with the almost inaudible one from Anderson Lakes in Conway. I think he is the last of the Merrell's Marauders. I do have one good volunteer interviewer here in Charleston area, and will be training two more from Conway this weekend. From Conway, my helpers are a 101 Airborne vet from Vietnam, and his Red Cross wife. What I don't have is a good editor, so being a volunteer myself, I cannot afford a professional one.   looking forward to meeting you,   Ron Alexander

Trump vs. Vets

Trump and Veterans
When it comes to veterans, Donald Trump has crossed a lot of lines in this campaign. Trump attacked John McCain for getting captured. He has pledged to escalate our military involvement in the Middle East and privatize veterans care when they return home.

But last night ... last night ... Trump went further than anyone could have imagined:
"Iraq, crooked as hell. How about bringing baskets of money, millions and millions of dollars, and handing it out. I want to know. Who are the soldiers that had that job? Because I think they are living very well right now, whoever they may be." - Donald Trump
There are only two possibilities here: 1. Trump just accused U.S. troops of stealing money in Iraq. A crime. One punishable by prison. Or, 2. he doesn't know Iraqi troops didn't hand out U.S. money in Iraq.

Either way, Donald Trump has proven - once again - he is unfit to be our next Commander in Chief.
